NPS 09 A Sol Duc Wilderness Volunteer
Olympic National Park (Port Angeles, WA)
Location: Port Angeles, WA 98362
Position Description
Olympic National Park is a wonderfully diverse park with glacier-capped peaks, spectacular rain forests, and a rugged wilderness coast on the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington State. The Sol Duc highcountry is one of the most spectacular mountain areas of the park. Wildlife, such as bear, elk, deer and cougar are abundant.

DUTIES: The Sol Duc wilderness is one of the most popular hiking and backpacking areas in the park. Much of it is spectacular highcountry terrain of mountain peaks, lakes and subalpine meadows. Heavy visitor use of the fragile subalpine wilderness requires a strong visitor education program in minimum impact camping. Late melting snow, steep terrain and severe mountain weather create a visitor safety threat. Volunteers help paid rangers and work independently patrolling and maintaining area trails, cleaning and maintaining backcountry toilets, rehabilitating impacted natural resource areas, monitoring and documenting trail and camping impacts, and providing information on trails, safety, campsites and Leave No Trace minimum impact techniques to wilderness users. Occasionally, volunteers will assist in emergency operations such as search and rescue, emergency medical services to visitors, and possibly, wildland firefighting duties. Following an initial training period of up to four weeks, volunteers will be scheduled to work at the three wilderness ranger stations in the Sol Duc highcountry (stations are canvas-sided tents equipped with cots, Coleman stoves, lanterns, first aid supplies, cooking utensils, tools, etc.). Work schedules will generally be ten days on and four days off. Typically, one or two of these days are spent at the Eagle Ranger Station, a frontcountry visitor contact station, staffing the information desk, issuing wilderness permits and bear canisters, providing visitor services and making cash register sales of nature association materials. Some work may have to be performed under arduous conditions such as rain, snow, wind, cold, mud and insects. There are occasionally long days hiking considerable distances with a heavy (~50 pound) pack. These hardships and challenges are, however, usually outweighed by the excellent learning opportunity provided by living and working in an extraordinarily beautiful mountain wilderness area.

SKILLS: Extensive experience in backcountry hiking and backpacking, preferably in the mountains and with some winter or snow experience, is needed in addition to an interest in wilderness management.Excellent physical condition is required. The standard pack test will be given as part of the wildland firefighter qualification and can be used as an approximate gauge of the fitness required for the job. To pass the test, you must walk (not run) three miles with a 45 pound pack in 45 minutes. Social deprivation, invasion of privacy, harsh environmental conditions, arduous physical labor, stressful emergencies, homesickness and longing for creature comforts are all challenges that may be faced.Typical training includes three days of wilderness management training including wildlife (i.e. bear) awareness and safety, three days of basic search and rescue training, three days of general park training and seven days of Sol Duc subdistrict training and orientation which includes a four day staff trip into the wilderness, visitor contact station duties, trail maintenance techniques, radio use, and park regulations and visitor contacts.

COMPENSATION: Housing is provided. Housing (and laundry facilities) while in training, on days off, and otherwise as needed, is available at a shared crew quarters building near the Eagle Ranger Station. Some basic uniform items are provided. In addition, a cash reimbursement, up to $200 per month, will be available. A personal vehicle provides more flexibility on days off.

HOW TO APPLY: If you are interested in this position, apply online and mail or Email a resume with references to: stu curtin, c/o Storm King Ranger Station, 106 Lake Crescent Road, Port Angeles, WA. 98363; Email: stu_curtin@nps.gov; telephone: 360-928-3380 with questions.

NPS Information Receptionist
Governors Island National Monument (New York, NY)
Location: New York, NY 10004
Position Description
Background Information:

For more than two centuries, the military communities on Governors Island were woven into the intricate social, political and economic tapestry that is New York City. From 1776-1996, Governors Island stood as a silent sentinel in New York Harbor, and provided protection of the ideals represented by the Statue of Liberty across the Bay. We invite you to explore the island's history as it evolved from colonial outpost to regional administrative center for the U.S. Army and Coast Guard.

Governors Island, a 172 acre island in New York Harbor, is administered jointly by the City and State of New York through the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC) and the National Park Service. The National Park Service administers 22 acres of the island that includes two historic forts, Fort Jay and Castle Williams.

Governors Island opened to the public on a seasonal basis during the summer of 2003 with the National Park Service playing an important role in the public access program. Each summer, GIPEC and the National Park Service has expanded public access and sponsored programs for over 70,000 visitors in 2007. Since we are a young National Park site, the contributions made by our volunteers will noticeably enrich our tours and public program offerings. We have a very small, team-oriented staff and there are many ways that volunteers can help create dynamic experiences for our visitors.

Position Description:

Volunteers will wear a standardized uniform. National Park Service Volunteer patches are provided by the park.

NPS Front Desk/Visitor Center
Amistad National Recreation Area (Del Rio, TX)
Location: Del Rio, TX 78840
Position Description
Hello, We are seeking volunteers to work at the primary visitor information center on U.S. Highway 90, six miles west of the community of Del Rio, Texas. The volunteer will staff the front desk, answer telephones, answer visitor questions, take reservations for the park group campsites, sell lake use permits to boating visitors, and sell annual hunting permits to archery-only deer hunters. Volunteers will also sell items at the visitor center bookstore.

Amistad National Recreation Area is located adjacent to the community of Del Rio, Texas, at an elevation of 1140 feet. Del Rio, population 38,000, offers full services, including a Regional Medical Center, two large grocery stores, a community college, and Sul Ross University. Lake Amistad is a man-made reservoir created after construction of Amistad Dam was completed in 1968. The reservoir straddles the international boundary between the United States and Mexico. Lake Amistad has gotten a reputation as an excellent fishery for Largemouth Black Bass, with the lake record currently at 15.68 pounds. There are also Striped Bass which have been introduced into the lake, with a current lake record Striper of 45 pounds. Fishing for Channel Catfish is also quite good during the winter months. Amistad also provides archery-only deer hunting opportunities in five hunt areas within the park during the winter, with many of these bow hunters staying at our campgrounds. There are excellent bird watching opportunities at the park, as well as abundant wildlife. There is also significant Indian history (pictographs), railroad history, and military history associated with this area.

Amistad provides archery-only hunting opportunities from October through January, and the volunteer at the visitor center will assist in issuing approximately 700 annual hunting permits to these hunters from mid-August through December. Amistad has excellent fishing opportunities, and allows bass fishing tournaments on the lake. The volunteer at the visitor center will assist in selling many hundreds of annual lake use permits to these fishermen throughout the year, but especially during the months of January through March.

The Volunteers who bring their own recreational vehicle can stay for free at one of six volunteer RV pads located in the park, where water, sewer, and electricity are provided free of charge. These RV pads are located near the Diablo East boat ramp, and are approximately three miles from the visitor information center. Propane reimbursements are available upon request.

We have permanent staff working the front desk of the visitor information center, but we welcome the opportunity to have volunteers to assist us as it can become a bit busy at times at the visitor center. Since the visitor center volunteers will be handling money from two separate cash registers, we are required to perform a background investigation on all front desk volunteers. The volunteers will need to complete what is called a NACI background investigation, which will be good for five years. If you already have a NACI from a previous park, that can be used here at Amistad. If you do not have a NACI, we prefer to initiate and complete the background investigation before the volunteer arrives at the park. We welcome volunteers who wish to work at the visitor center, but due to the time required to train new front desk volunteers and fully orient them to the park, we would prefer persons who are willing to commit at least three months to the position. Please contact the Park Volunteer Coordinator, John Little at 830-775-7491 ext 206, or John_Little@nps.gov for further details and available positions.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the National Park Service.

NPS Front Desk Volunteer - Visitor Information Center

Programs will be presented on refuges and in local classrooms. Peak demand for programs is usually spring (Feb-May) and fall (Sept-Dec). A background in education or interpretation would be extremely helpful but is not necessary. Skills Desired: Interns should have good communication skills, an interest in and ability to learn about area history and natural resources and a desire to share knowledge with visiting public and work with others, including children. Experience with public speaking and designing environmental education activities is beneficial, but not necessary. Training is provided in interpretive techniques to effectively present information to visitors. A flexibility to handle variations in routine due to shifting priorities and visitor needs is appreciated. This position will provide a motivated person the opportunity to spread his/her appreciation of the natural world to many refuge visitors.

Myriad narrow canyons, towering cliffs, expansive slickrock, domes, arches and monoliths provide inspiration, solitude and recreational opportunities for approximately ¾ million people each year. The park also preserves archeological features and petroglyphs of the Fremont Culture, and the remnants of Fruita, a Mormon pioneer settlement that includes 2,600 fruit trees.
